Northern Maine Is Running Out of Time to Prepare — And Another Storm Is Already on Its Way

Caribou, Maine — The ground across northern Maine has absorbed nearly all it can. Now, forecasters are warning that another significant rain system arriving late this week could be the tipping point — one that pushes already saturated soils past their limit and sends floodwaters into roads, low-lying areas and communities across the region.

Rain showers from the current system are expected to taper off Monday evening, giving residents a narrow window of just a few days before the next round hits.

The concern this time is not just the rain itself — it is what lies beneath it. Soils across Aroostook County, Piscataquis County and Downeast Maine remain heavily saturated from recent rainfall. When the next storm arrives Thursday night into Friday, even moderate rainfall could trigger rapid flooding with little warning.

Precipitation probabilities for Thursday night through Friday are already climbing between 70% and 85% across much of the region. Communities including Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, Millinocket and Bangor are all in the potential impact zone for periods of steady, heavy rain.

Forecasters are also keeping a close eye on isolated thunderstorm chances as a cold front pushes through. Gusty winds accompanying the system could bring down trees and knock out power — particularly in areas that receive the heaviest rainfall totals.

Drivers are urged to treat every water-covered road as a serious hazard. Just a few inches of moving water is enough to stall a vehicle, and visibility will drop significantly during heavy downpours. Campers and anyone with weekend outdoor plans should monitor forecasts closely, as conditions could shift quickly.

Additional flood advisories or watches may be issued before the storm arrives.

Officials say confidence is rising that this will be a significant weather event for northern Maine. Residents are encouraged to prepare now — before the skies open again.
