It’s not often that the Coyotes football squad finds themselves at the wrong end of a running clock. That’s what happened last Friday, though, when the visiting Coyotes were blanked 37-0 at Green Hill High School.
Coming off a lackluster offensive performance in a 9-6 loss to Lavergne, the Coyotes managed only 23 yards of offensive, while the defense was scorched for two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs, all in the first half.
Add to that a safety and a 55-yard free kick return for a touchdown immediately after, and the Hawks were safely ahead 37-0 at the half. TSSAA rules call for a running clock if a team is ahead by 30 points or more in the second half.
The Hawks scored on a long touchdown pass by quarterback Kannon Burroughs on their second play from scrimmage, then followed that up with another Burroughs TD pass to put the hosts up 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Hawks take to the ground. Two touchdown runs put them up 28-0, followed by the safety and free kick return.
The Coyotes travel to Rossview this Friday for their first region contest. Kickoff time is 7 p.m.
