Sophomore Standford Thompson was named January’s Athlete of the Month. Ali Weeks sat down with Standford to discuss this honor and other things.
Ali Weeks (AW): How do you feel about being named Athlete of the Month?
Standford Thompson (ST): “It’s a very nice accomplishment I wanted since freshman year.”
AW: You went to the state wrestling tournament. How do you feel about your performance there?
ST: “I’m very happy how I performed minus the backs caused me not to place, but I plan to get back into the ring and work harder.”
AW: Which strengths do you believe you have that make you a great athlete?
ST: “Leadership, perseverance and heart.”
AW: Is there a coach or athlete you admire as a role model and why?
ST: “My wrestling coach, Brock Budesheim. I love the way he represents himself.”
AW: What do you look for in a great coach?
ST: “I look for leadership, helping the athletes, being an athlete and person outside of the sport.”
AW: Who do you wish was watching you perform at every game or match?
ST: “I wish for my mom, and she’s there when I play.”
AW: What one word describes you?
ST: “Hardworking.”
