Houston's Beloved Malaysian Spot Is Closing — And the Reason Will Break Your Heart

HOUSTON, Texas — One of Houston’s most beloved Malaysian restaurants is closing its doors for good — and loyal customers are heartbroken.

Sambal Chef, a staple of Houston’s Chinatown neighborhood, announced this week that June 28, 2026 will be its final day of service.

The closure was not a choice the owners wanted to make.

The property at 6833 W. Sam Houston Pkwy. was recently sold to a new landlord, who plans to move their own business into the space. With no option to renew their lease, the Sambal Chef team made the painful decision to close this chapter.

“After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to renew our lease,” the restaurant wrote in a Facebook post Saturday.

Five Years, Two Locations, One Community

Sambal Chef first opened in October 2021 on Broadway Street in Pearland. It later moved to its Chinatown location in June 2024, bringing authentic Malaysian flavors to a neighborhood that quickly embraced it.

The menu featured dishes that kept regulars coming back — beef rendang, roti canai, sizzling plates, and their signature sambal-flavored fried rice.

For many diners, it was not just a restaurant. It was a taste of home.

“The memories we have created together will always hold a special place in our hearts,” the owners wrote in their farewell message.

Houston’s Restaurant Scene Takes Another Hit

Sambal Chef is not alone. Houston has seen a string of closures in recent months.

Jax on the Tracks shut down after just three months in Garden Oaks. The Pho Fix at The Stomping Grounds closed last week. Istanbul Grill in Rice Village — a long-running neighborhood favorite — is also winding down. IBUN Bakery in Chinatown closed back in February.

The trend is raising real concerns about rising costs, shifting landlord priorities, and what it means for the city’s diverse food culture.

Sambal Chef’s last day is June 28. If you have not been yet, there is still time.
