Louisiana Teen, 18, Dies Days After High School Graduation in River Accident — Family Shares Heartbreaking Details

A grieving mother is remembering her 18-year-old son as a young man who dreamed of changing the world, just days after he tragically lost his life in a Louisiana river.

Jonis Warren Jr., a recent graduate of Mandeville High School, drowned while tubing on the Bogue Chitto River on June 6. According to authorities, he went underwater and never resurfaced. Search teams, including divers using sonar equipment, worked to locate him, and his body was recovered two days later and transported to the coroner’s office.

His mother, Shaneika Spicer, described the devastating moment she learned her son was missing, recalling how she pleaded with detectives to bring him home, even as she sensed deep down that the outcome would not be what she hoped for. She reflected on the painful reality that no one can compete with the power of nature.

Spicer remembered her son as a caring, protective young man with big dreams — he had recently graduated and was planning to pursue a career as an aerospace engineer. The second-oldest of five siblings, Jonis was known for his love of anime, his favorite icy treats, and his magnetic personality. His mother called him her “legend,” recalling a touching conversation in which he expressed his desire to make the world better, telling her that change has to start somewhere.

The family’s loss has rippled through their community. A friend of his girlfriend’s family started an online fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses, describing Jonis as someone whose warm smile brought people together and who was deeply loved by everyone who knew him, especially his girlfriend.

A makeshift memorial has appeared near the accident site, with mementos left by those mourning the teen. His funeral is scheduled for June 18, as family and friends prepare to say goodbye to a young man whose life was cut short just as it was beginning.

This is a sensitive topic involving the loss of a young person. If you or someone you know is struggling with grief or difficult emotions, reaching out to a counselor or support service can help.
