One Dead, Dozens Injured After Massive Church Tent Collapses in Virginia Amid Severe Storm

A tragic incident unfolded Friday evening in Moneta, Bedford County, Virginia, when a large event tent at EastLake Community Church collapsed under powerful winds, leaving one person dead and 11 others hospitalized.

The collapse occurred around 6:45 p.m. as a community gathering, part of the church’s “Multiply Week” celebration, was taking place beneath a massive tent capable of seating 1,500 people. The event had drawn families for food, worship, children’s water activities, and ice cream when severe weather struck the area without much warning.

According to Bedford County’s acting fire and rescue chief, the pastor had already begun evacuating attendees from the tent when it suddenly gave way. “It happened very quickly,” she said, describing the immediate aftermath as chaotic as responders worked to account for everyone present.

Eleven people were rushed to area hospitals following the collapse, though their current conditions have not yet been disclosed. An additional eleven individuals were treated for injuries at the scene and later released without needing hospitalization.

Officials confirmed that the tent had been properly secured beforehand, but the sudden burst of wind associated with the storm proved too powerful for the structure to withstand. Fortunately, members of a nearby fire department happened to be present at the event and acted swiftly, helping guide people to safety amid the panic.

The collapse took place while most of Virginia, including the Moneta region, remained under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. that evening — underscoring how quickly dangerous weather can escalate during outdoor gatherings.

Pastor Troy Keaton addressed the tragedy in an emotional statement, saying his “church family suffered a great tragedy” that night. He recalled walking to the stage to dismiss the crowd when a sudden gust lifted the tent. He confirmed that one of the church’s members died from injuries sustained in the collapse, while others were hurt.

“We are currently focused on caring and praying for them,” Keaton said, as the small community of roughly 450 residents comes together to process the devastating loss.
