Man's Gun Goes Off at Walmart — A Mom Shopping With Her Kids Paid the Price

VALDOSTA, Georgia — A routine shopping trip turned terrifying when a gun accidentally fired inside a Walmart — and an innocent mother paid the price.

A 34-year-old woman was struck by bullet shrapnel in both ankles while shopping with her small children at a Valdosta Walmart on June 9.

The shot did not come from a robbery or a fight.

It came from a man’s pocket.

How It Happened

John Eady, 21, was carrying a loaded pistol in the front pocket of his basketball-style shorts — with no holster. His cellphone was in the same pocket.

When Eady reached in to grab his phone, the firearm discharged into the ground.

Shrapnel from the bullet and broken floor tiles tore through the nearby mother’s ankles.

She was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and survived — but the close call shook everyone at the scene.

Police React

Valdosta Police Department did not mince words.

Officers stated that Eady was carrying the firearm in a way that was “a gross deviation from the standard of care that a reasonable person would have exercised.”

VPD Chief Leslie Manahan added that the incident “serves as a reminder that carrying a firearm is a significant responsibility.”

An arrest warrant was obtained the very next day.

Eady turned himself in and was charged with one misdemeanor count of reckless conduct. He was booked into the Lowndes County Jail.

A Mother. Small Children. A Walmart Aisle.

What makes this story hit differently is the setting.

This was not a dark alley or a high-crime area. It was a Walmart. In the middle of the day. With kids present.

The police chief specifically noted how thankful officers were that no one suffered more severe injuries — given that small children were standing right there.

One careless decision. One unsecured weapon. One family that will never forget a grocery run.
