Louisiana Driver Flees Police, Leaps From Highway Overpass Into Swamp, Then Survives Alligator Attack Before Arrest

A traffic stop in Louisiana escalated into a chaotic pursuit when a man suspected of driving under the influence allegedly jumped from an interstate overpass into a swamp, was attacked by an alligator, and continued trying to escape officers before finally being taken into custody.

According to authorities, 40-year-old Victor Rivas drew police attention after reports of reckless driving on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish, located just west of New Orleans. Officials said the vehicle Rivas was driving, a Toyota Supra, struck a concrete barrier during the incident and lost a tire, yet kept moving until it was later located in neighboring St. Charles Parish.

When troopers stopped the car, officers said Rivas showed signs of impairment, prompting a suspected drunk-driving investigation. Authorities said that before the stop could be completed, Rivas ran from the vehicle on foot.

The chase then took a dramatic turn. According to law enforcement, Rivas jumped from an elevated portion of Interstate 310 down into the marshland below in an attempt to avoid capture. He was briefly spotted near Highway 61 but reportedly fled back into the dense wetlands.

During the pursuit through the swamp, officials said an alligator attacked Rivas, leaving injuries on his arms. Despite being hurt, authorities said he continued trying to evade officers before he was ultimately apprehended.

Rivas was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries before being booked into jail, according to police.

Louisiana State Police credited drone technology with helping officers track Rivas through the marsh and bring the pursuit to an end. Officials also used the incident to remind the public of the dangers associated with impaired driving, noting that such behavior can lead to serious and unpredictable outcomes.

The case remains under investigation, and additional charges related to the pursuit and crash are expected as authorities review the incident further.
