The Coyotes’ Kaden Pace puts up a shot against Northeast in Friday’s game

After splitting the season series, the Coyotes and Northeast Eagles battled on Friday for a chance to play top-seeded Rossview for the Region 7, District 13 championship. Poor shooting and rebounding doomed the Coyotes, however, as they fell 58-44 to their rivals.

The Northeast trio of Nazier Leonard, Taetum Curry, and Jayden Young scored 49 of the Eagles’ 58 points with Leonard leading all scorers with 24. For the Coyotes, outside shots did not fall and the inside game was neutralized by the Eagles’ big men Dieng Wang and Chance Austin.

Yet, the Coyotes still found themselves trailing just 28-21 at the half.

The Coyotes actually trimmed the Eagles’ lead to six at the end of the third quarter, but that’s when things quickly turned sour for the Coyotes.

Northeast was able to easily handle the Coyotes’ full-court press in the fourth. Leonard was easily able to get to the basket and either score or be fouled. At the same time, the Coyotes could not buy a basket. The Eagles went on a 22-8 run and put the game away by the middle of the 4th quarter.

Northeast will go on to face Rossview for the district championship on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., while the Coyotes will face Clarksville High School for third place in the district at 6 p.m. No matter the outcome, the Coyotes will be on the road for the first round of the regional on Friday.

Scoring: Kayden Pace 10, Branden Dugger 10, Kameron Bowers 6, Tahjir Maddox 6, Jayoni Harding 6, Devin Smith 4, Amaree Lafortune 2 (44)
