This week saw the Lady Coyotes flag football squad remain undefeated with two shutout victories over Kenwood High and Northwest High. After the two victories, the team’s record stands at 4-0-1.

Monday, April 1

The team faced Northwest’s Vikings at home and dominated from the opening possession, winning 25-0.

The offense showed it is not one-dimensional. Junior quarterback Kinleigh Lewis hit sophomore Nicole Cushionberry for a 30-yard touchdown pass. That score was followed by senior Madison Bennett’s long touchdown run. The offense added another Cushionberry touchdown catch as well as a touchdown catch by sophomore Lyssandra Rodriguez.

The defense continued its domination over opponents. Junior Leilyn Mercado led the defense with eight flag-pulls and two tackles for loss. Her sister, sophomore Caitlyn Mercado, added an interception. Junior Ariel Aldana snagged two interceptions and senior Dayonna Williams had one.

In a game played at Austin Peay’s Fortera Stadium, the Lady Coyotes dominated defensively again on their way to a 26-0 victory.

Bennett scored two long touchdown runs in the first half to give the Lady Coyotes an insurmountable lead. The second half saw scores by sophomore Nahliyani Beasley on a touch pass from Lewis, while Lewis scored on a 50-plus yard run.

Defensively, Williams led with seven flag-pulls. Caitlyn Mercado snagged another interception, but according to head coach Aaron King, “Adison Aldana was a menace in the middle of the field in the second half.” She recorded five pass breakups, and along with Leilyn Mercado’s defensive rushing, limited Kenwood’s pass game.

This week the Lady Coyotes finish the regular season with Senior Night on Monday, April 8, against Rossview’s Hawks and a trip to Montgomery Central on Thursday. The matchup on Thursday will determine who earns the number one seed in the playoffs.

Senior Night ceremonies began at 5:30 p.m. with the game to follow at 6 p.m.
