Coyote wrestlers send 12 to State

The Coyote wrestling program continues its historic season on Friday, Feb. 23, when it sends 12 wrestlers to the State Tournament. After the boy’s wrestling squad won its first district and region championships, individual wrestlers competed last weekend to see who would qualify for the State Individual Championships.

Student-athletes who qualified are as follows:

  • Lexi Dean
  • Jes’Onia Barefield
  • Eleasa Renken
  • Mariana Bowen
  • Jehieli Velez-Almodovar
  • Colin Villaluz
  • Garrett Furnas
  • Aiden Renken
  • Ty Hutchens
  • Cael Crume
  • Standford Thompson

Head coach Brock Budesheim is proud of the teams’ efforts. “Both teams have met and at times exceeded our expectations,” he said. Myself and Coach Shane have believed in these teams since the beginning. For it to be only our second season with these kids and have the accomplishments that have never been done is amazing.”

After winning district and region championships for the first time in school history, Budesheim said, “The work that the wrestlers put in daily is the reason for this success.”

According to Budesheim, “We’re not done.”


In the regional tournament held at Clarksville High School on Feb. 10, Coyote wrestlers placed as follows:

  • Colin Villaluz, 11, placed second in the 106-pound weight class
  • Caleb Villaluz, 11, placed third in the 113-pound weight class
  • Jamie Dexter, 10, placed second in the 120-pound weight class
  • Garrett Furnas, 12, placed first in the 126-pound weight class
  • Ethan Avila, 10, placed second in the 132-pound weight class
  • Aiden Renken, 12, placed first in the 138-pound weight class
  • Ty Hutchens, 10, placed third in the 144-pound weight class
  • Cael Crume, 12, placed second in the 157-pound weight class
  • Nate Ellis, 11, placed fourth in the 165-pound weight class
  • Standford Thompson, 11, placed second in the 175-pound weight class
  • Ayden Andalon, 12, placed fourth in the 215-pound weight class
  • Kantrell Washington, 11, placed fourth in the 285-pound weight class
