Attendance matters

FAQ about attendance
Attendance+matters

Question: What is Tennessee’s student attendance policy?

Answer: According to Tennessee Code annotated 49-6-3001, all Tennessee children ages six (6) through 17 are required to attend school. Failure to attend school will result in a referral to juvenile court for chronic absenteeism.

Q: What does “truancy” mean?

A: A student in Tennessee is considered truant if she/he accrues five (5) absences including out-of-school suspensions.

Q: What is meant by “chronic absenteeism”?

A: Includes ALL absences (excused & unexcused). A Tennessee student is chronically absent if he/she misses 10% or more of instructional days (typically 20 days).

Q: How many parent notes can I bring in to have an absence excused?

A: Students are allowed 5 parent notes per school year for ANY reason.

Q: What if I’m absent for a funeral? Is this excused?

A: Yes, but you must bring in the obituary/funeral program.

Q: What makes an absence unexcused?

A: A few things:

  • Senior skip day is NOT a district-approved absence.
  • If you miss more than 10 mins of a class period, you will be marked absent from that class.
  • OSS (Out of School Suspensions) are considered unexcused absences.
  • If you are absent 10 days in a row, you will be withdrawn from WCHS.
  • In general, an unexcused absence results from when a student does not provide adequate documentation to support their absence.

If you have any questions about attendance, please see Ms. Williams in the Attendance Office.
