Junior Evan Sims earned the September Athlete of the Month Award. He has run cross country for three years, earning a State appearance as a sophomore.
Question: What does it mean to you to be named Athlete of the Month?
Answer: “It means a lot. I guess it’s just an accumulation of all the work I’ve done. I’ve grown a lot over these past few years. You put in the work and you get rewarded.”
Q: How long have you been running cross country?
A: “I started in 6th grade, but I had to stop because of COVID. I’ve been running since freshman year.”
Q: What is your favorite part about playing this sport?
A: “I just like the competition. Being able to see myself get better in the sport.”
Q: What is your favorite memory or moment as a student-athlete?
A: “It would probably be qualifying for state sophomore year.”
Q: Who is your biggest role model and why?
A: “My parents because they’ve done so much for to get me to where I am today.”
Q: What is the best advice you have ever received from a coach?
A: Coach Newlin told me, “It’s all about the work you put in. You get out what you put in.”
Q: What is your favorite song to listen to before competing?
A: “I dont’ really listen to music before competing. I talk with my teammates.”
Q: Have you lived in Clarksville your entire life? If not, where have you lived?
A: “I was born in Bethel, NC. My dad joined the military, so we moved to Ft. Collins, CO and then to Ft. Benning, GA and Gainesville, Ga.”
Q: What advice would you give to runners just starting?
A: “If you have the time, slow progress is the best. You can’t let yourself stop running. Keep working at yourself.”
